Rohit Sharma Most Sixes in ODIs Record Broken

Rohit Sharma most sixes in ODIs became the largest news in the world of cricket, when the India skipper shattered the long term record of Shahid Afridi with his 352 nd six in the opening OD between India and South Africa in Ranchi. It was a time that not only defined the progression of Rohit the batter but also the dramatic change in ODI batting in the past ten years. What was unique about the milestone was the dramatic fashion in which Rohit has changed into an entirely different person what he used to be a conservative opener and became the best six-hitter the format has ever to witness.

The ascending to the top was not immediate. To start with Rohit did not make ODI debut as a natural power-hitter. Actually, he required three innings before he hit his first six and, prior to he hitting his maiden hundred scored his 40th innings, he was required to strike five sixes with over a thousand balls pitched at him. His slaying change started most precisely in 2013 when he hit 209 against Australia in Bengaluru and the number of sixes he hit in one inning was 16 which became a record at that time. Not only did that inning contribute to his tally; it transformed him as an ODI batter. That hit was the only time that Rohit got a 36 in ten-two innings. Once more after that point the pace was astounding as he was performing 316 more sixes in his subsequent 167 hits, or an average of 1 in 27 hits–an amazing increase.

The largest growth though occurred upon Rohit becoming the all format captain of India in 2022. His balls-per-six ratio had fallen to only 17.69 with 107 sixes in only 46 innings. Being the captain of the ODI side contributed to his aggressive behavior. The second most sixes by any captain in ODI with respect to the number of innings is set by him at 126 in 55 innings.

Rohit now has many types of records: most sixes against a single team (93 vs Australia), most sixes in one country (182 in India) and most sixes in a year (67 in 2023). He also holds the record as the highest six hitter in ODI world cup history having hit 54 sixes with a record 31 of them in the 2023 ODI world cup.

The analysis of the origin and manner in which Rohit hits these sixes provides a lot about the way he does it. He has been dominating both the pace and spin making 232 and 120 sixes respectively against fast and slow bowlers. The most extraordinary shots of his were his famous pull and hook shots, of which only 123 of his sixes have been of the pull and his 188 of the maximum have dropped into the leg-side arc between backward square-leg and deep midwicket. Rohit has hit 130 sixes in the first ten overs, the only second-best, with ball-by-ball hit of Chris Gayle, who with the ball by ball hit has hit 152 sixes in all ODIs. Over 11-40 he has struck 170 greater than any other player.

Lastly, he has also contributed 52 more in the death overs.Rohit had a maximum off Marco Jansen to become the 150th bowler to be sent a maximum by the South African. It is interesting to note that, the most number of 100 balls that Rohit has ended up with, without hitting any six is against Marlon Samuels. Even Afridi the man on whom Rohit had surpassed his record, threw 89 balls in his direction and did not give him a six.

In order to see how Rohit has gotten the success, it is useful to go back and see how the record developed over time. This ODI milestone has only been surpassed by 19 hands since the very first ODI six in 1971 with such legends as Viv Richards, Gordon Greenidge, Ian Botham, Sanath Jayasuriya and Afrid having ruled different eras. Afridi has served the longest with 5641 days, second only to Richards who has served an amazing 6091 days when Rohit enters.
