It’s been a surprise in the Formula 1 paddock that McLaren showcased its potential at the 2024 Italian Grand Prix. Lando Norris, who fantastically clinched the pole position in Monza, has stated that the McLaren’s car is now 20km/h faster on the straights than before the year 2020. It is a great improvement this drastic increase in speed which is a clear testimony to this teams desire to outstanding performance especially in an area that has for a long time been a weakness for this team at this particular circuit.
During the qualifying session Monza was a sheer example of mclaren skill. Norris who qualified with his teammate, Oscar Piastri, stood on the first two positions which was quite a shocker that few expected. This is a long way from last season when McLaren was struggling in the midfield, and did not had sufficient straight-line speed to fight in the front of the grid. The reversal is difficult to fathom, but Norris and Piastri are now in this battle right at the very top.
So what is the real secret to this change? In the words of Norris, it is not so much a race day masterclass but the team’s obsession with finding marginal gains in the car’s aerodynamics. The increase in speed to 20km/h is not just numbers, it’s a revolution that enabled McLaren to compete with the Red Bull team, which has been consistently steadily at this point. Their mode of operation which involves slow and incremental changes for the improvement of an app or a website has evidently proven successful.
However, it is not all said and done. To be fair, Norris and Piastri do not hide the fact that this is progress but also McLaren is far from idle. The team wants more, partly in a bid to sustain this form as the season aiais passed on. McLaren keeps serenely building its campaign for 2024, and it is very important for the other competitors to pay attention.
