Monaco: A Prestigious Kickoff

The Monaco Grand Prix Legacy

The Monaco Grand Prix, nestled in the heart of the French Riviera, has a storied history of unpredictability, and this season was no exception. Larry ten Voorde, eyeing a historic triple victory, faced stiff competition from the likes of Harry King, Dorian Boccolacci, and Loek Hartog.

Imola’s Setback

The cancellation of the Imola race due to adverse weather conditions heightened the anticipation for the Monaco showdown. With perfect racing conditions, the field was set for an intense battle on the notorious Circuit de Monaco.

Qualifying Drama Unfolds

Early Practice Dramas

The practice session took an unexpected turn when the roar of engines was replaced by the screech of tires. #10 Pablo Marcelo Otero collided with the barrier just four minutes into the session, causing a 10-minute interruption. The incident added pressure to the field, with mechanics scrambling to repair Otero’s blue and black Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.

Ten Voorde’s Pole Triumph

In qualifying, Ten Voorde, the Dutch maestro, showcased his prowess, claiming pole position by navigating the unforgiving twists of Monaco with precision. Closely following him was Harry King, the rising star from BWT Lechner Racing. Otero’s dreams were dashed after a collision with the barrier, eliminating him from the race due to the strict 107% qualifying rule.

Rookies Shine

Despite the challenges, the 2023 rookies showcased both respect for the track and impressive skill. GP Elite’s #28 Huub van Eijndhoven emerged as the fastest rookie, navigating the iconic street circuit with a finesse that belied his newcomer status. The Dutch driver’s performance in the eighth fastest position highlighted the promising influx of fresh talent into the Supercup.

Race Day: King’s Victory and Rookie Triumphs

King’s Surprising Start

The race’s biggest surprise unfolded at the start, as Larry ten Voorde, perched on grid position one, lost the acceleration fight to Harry King. The Briton, who celebrated his first victory in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland just four weeks ago, went on to defend his lead seemingly effortlessly. The early stages saw Ten Voorde keeping the pressure up, making every attempt to regain his lost ground.

Safety Car Twist

Just when victory seemed within reach for Ten Voorde, a safety car phase at the end of the race added an unexpected twist to the tale. The iconic red Porsche 911 GT3 safety car led the pack, neutralizing the race and putting paid to Ten Voorde’s dreams of securing a triple victory. King maintained his composure, skillfully navigating the winding streets of Monaco and crossing the finish line in triumph.

Rookie Standouts

In the rookie category, Huub van Eijndhoven’s name shone brightly. The Dutchman not only claimed victory among the rookies but also finished an impressive seventh overall. Giorgio Amati and Harri Jones, rookies from Dinamic Motorsport and BWT Lechner Racing, respectively, showcased their talent, with seven out of the 10 rookies completing the challenging Monte Carlo race.
