From the narrow streets of Monte Carlo to the broad spaces of the Styrian Alps: Round 2 of the Porsche Supercup at Spielberg 2023 captivated motorsport fans with hard-fought duels over 18 intense laps. The race proved to be one of the most exciting in the Supercup’s 31-year history, offering good overtaking opportunities on the wide Alpine circuit.
Spielberg’s track, in stark contrast to Monaco, allowed drivers to push the limits without immediate consequences. Track limits were tested, especially in corners before and after the start-finish straight, with large run-off areas preventing major consequences. However, the infield posed risks, as seen when #2 Harri Jones got stuck in the gravel on lap 17, prompting a brief red phase.
In the Practice Session, #1 Bastian Buus set the fastest time, showcasing the high performance density in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. Qualifying brought unpredictability with changing weather. #25 Larry ten Voorde, managing the weather conditions adeptly, secured pole position.
The race unfolded with palpable excitement as Buus overtook Masters and engaged in a fierce battle with Ten Voorde. They swapped the lead multiple times, creating a spectacle that lasted until the checkered flag. In a stunning move, Buus secured P1 in the final moments of the race, reminiscent of the showdown at Zandvoort a week earlier.
The podium had its share of drama, with Harry King’s remarkable chase earning him a post-race penalty, ultimately dropping him to 10th place. Leon Köhler inherited the third spot on the podium.
The entire field fought hard, witnessing fender benders and spins. #11 Dorian Boccolacci climbed 13 places to secure fifth, and former motorcycle racer #9 Jorge Lorenzo gained 15 places to score his first championship points. #23 Jukka Honkavuori’s impressive journey from 30th to 8th showcased exceptional skill.
With Buus leading the standings after the duel, closely pursued by Ten Voorde, the championship battle promises continued excitement. The presence of 10 rookies added a dynamic element to the race, with Alessandro Ghiretti, Huub van Eijndhoven, and Benjamin Paque showcasing youthful talent.
Spielberg 2023 will be remembered as one of the most thrilling Porsche Supercup races, blending seasoned competitors’ skill with the exuberance of rookies. The mountain duel, podium twists, and intense battles across the field delivered an unforgettable spectacle.
