Portland E-Prix 2023 : Winners and Losers

Formula E debuted in Portland, USA, on June 23rd and 24th of June with a race featuring a show-stopping 403 overtakes, including a fight for the win on the last lap.

As with any other race, some successfully maximised their machinery and got the strategy right, while others failed to capitalise on opportunities.

Here are the winners and losers from the Portland E-Prix 2023.

WINNERS

JAKE DENNIS

Dennis secured a season-first pole, which he may not have wanted owing to comments about not wanting “to lead all way” before the race. The pole gave him the lead in the Drivers’ Championship with three extra points in the bag before the race.

Most drivers vied to be among the front-runners, but none wished to lead due to the disadvantage of a lack of slipstream, meaning it was less energy-efficient.

Dennis remained in front for most of the race, but an ill-timed Safety Car left him further down the order than he would have wanted. From there, he climbed back with bold overtakes and late dives around the outside. He ultimately finished runner-up to Cassidy in the race but a point ahead in the Championship.

TAG HUEUR PORSCHE FORMULA E TEAM

Porsche retained its lead in Constructors’ Championship with an impressive effort by both drivers, Antonio da Costa and Pascal Wehrlein.

Da Costa shone brightly for the team as he bagged a noticeable podium thanks to his aggressive driving style, while Wehrlein flew under the radar for most of the race, quietly getting the job done by moving from P18 to P8.

The team secured a decent points haul but is now closely followed by Envision Racing, with only five rounds of racing remaining.

LOSERS

SACHA FENESTRAZ

It was a messy and lacklustre race for Fenestraz, despite starting the race on the front row.He crashed into teammate Norman Nato on lap 7, which resulted in front wing damage and a necessary pitstop to keep the car going but placed him dead last. Fortunately, an opportune Safety Car on lap 15, closed the gap between the mid-field and briefly put him back in contention for the points. Hopes were quickly dashed, however, as racing resumed, and he remained low in the order.A frustrating weekend for him as he had a solid showing and was impressive on the timing sheets until the unfortunate race incident.

EDUARDO MORTARA

Maserati looked strong in the race, frequently featuring both drivers in the top 5. Both drivers were en route to bring home more points and inch closer to 5th place in the Constructors’ standings when they came together three laps before the checkered flag.Mortara suffered damage to the car, which meant he could not finish the race despite being within arms’ reach of a strong result, something he desperately needed after a less-than-satisfactory season.
