SSC TUATARA: Hypercar Controversy and Triumph

SSC North America is renowned for crafting hypercars and initially gained fame with the SSC Ultimate Aero, which held the title of fastest production car until the late 2010s when Bugatti Veyron Super Sport claimed the spot. Determined to reclaim glory for America, SSC introduced their newest hypercar, the SSC TUATARA, in 2018. This American beast boasted a powerful 5.9L V8 engine, generating 1350HP on normal fuel and a staggering 1750 horsepower on E85. Constructed with a carbon fiber body and monocoque, the TUATARA weighed less than a Maruti Suzuki Swift but packed significantly more power. Equipped with a 7-speed robotized manual gearbox, it effortlessly shifted gears in under 100 milliseconds. This high-performance marvel came with a price tag of $1.6 million.

With its exceptional engineering and cutting-edge technology, the $1.6-million TUATARA aimed to dethrone the reigning champions of top speed. In 2020, SSC set out to reclaim the title from Bugatti and Koenigsegg, taking the TUATARA to Nevada’s 160 highway. During two record-setting runs, the TUATARA achieved a remarkable top speed average of 316.1 mph, surpassing Koenigsegg’s record by 38.2 mph.

However, this achievement sparked doubts among many, with comment sections and Automotive YouTube influencers, such as Shmee100, questioning the legitimacy of the speed run. Detailed GPS and map analysis raised concerns about the accuracy of the recorded speeds, suggesting possible fabrication.

In response to the scepticism, SSC defended their position by citing certifications from equipment manufacturer ‘Dewetron,’ whose products were used in the speed test. However, Dewetron released a statement clarifying that none of their employees were present during the test and thus couldn’t confirm the test’s legitimacy due to concerns about equipment calibration. Dewetron’s statement dealt a significant blow to SSC’s credibility, forcing them to admit their failure to verify the equipment and the data before posting the video. Accepting their mistake, SSC faced international humiliation.

Determined to regain their reputation, SSC conducted another test in 2022 at The Kennedy Space Centre, enlisting the support of Race-logic and other organizations to validate their equipment and results. While the outcomes fell short of their previous attempts, the TUATARA achieved an average speed of 282.9 mph, setting a new official world record for the fastest production car.

This saga highlights the danger of becoming blinded by success and failing to identify flaws in one’s processes. SSC’s journey serves as a powerful lesson in humility, admitting mistakes on a global stage, and the courage to bounce back and prove doubters wrong. Despite the controversy, the SSC TUATARA remains one of the world’s fastest cars, solidifying its place in automotive history.
