Alpine F1 Management Faces Exodus: Szafnauer Out as Alpine Shifts Leadership

The Alpine Formula 1 team has been caught in a whirlwind of changes, with a significant exodus of senior employees, including the departure of team principal, Otmar Szafnauer. The shake-up also involves the exit of sporting director Alan Permane, while the Williams team principal, James Vowles, revealed that Alpine’s chief technical officer, Pat Fry, will be moving to Williams to take on the role of technical director.

These sudden changes come hot on the heels of the replacement of Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi, who now hands the reins to Philippe Krief, previously Alpine’s vice president of engineering and product performance. Alongside this appointment, Bruno Famin has been named as Alpine’s vice president of motorsport.

As a result of these shifts, Famin has taken over as the interim team principal, while Alpine Academy Director, Julian Rouse, assumes the role of interim sporting director.

Szafnauer’s tenure as Alpine’s team principal was relatively short-lived, spanning only 18 months since his transition from Aston Martin. An official statement from Alpine confirmed that he will fulfill his duties for the upcoming race in Belgium before bidding farewell to the team ahead of the summer break.

Permane, on the other hand, has been a cornerstone of the team for an impressive 34 years, joining during the team’s Benetton days and working diligently at Enstone ever since. Matt Harman continues to serve as the technical director amidst the recent changes.

Famin expressed gratitude towards Szafnauer and Permane, acknowledging their valuable contributions to the team. However, he revealed that the decision to part ways was mutual, as they did not align with the timeline to achieve the desired level of performance.

Alpine is currently undergoing a transformational phase, aiming to become an F1 championship contender through a 100-race plan following a reorganization and rebranding from Renault. The team managed to secure fourth place in the 2022 constructors’ championship, setting the stage for ambitious goals in 2023 – maintaining or improving that position while closing the gap to the top three teams.

However, the team’s current standing is below their expectations, currently occupying the sixth spot in this year’s standings. With a 40-point deficit to the resurgent McLaren and a significant 137 points behind third-placed Aston Martin, Alpine faces challenges on the path to achieving their targets. As the season progresses, Famin is committed to working closely with the team at Enstone and Viry-Chatillon to extract the maximum performance from their car and improve their standing in the fiercely competitive Formula 1 landscape.
