Quartararo speaks out on yamaha’s 2024 motogp struggles

In the world of MotoGP, Yamaha faced a pivotal moment during the 2024 Valencia test, and Fabio Quartararo, the team’s prominent rider, shed light on the challenges. The stark reality is that Yamaha’s 2024 bike still lags behind its competitors.

The journey commenced with the Misano test in September, where Yamaha’s first 2024 prototype received a lukewarm reception, particularly regarding its engine. Fast forward to the Valencia test, and Quartararo found himself 0.769s off the pace in 12th place, underlining the team’s struggles.

However, a ray of hope emerged with the announcement of new concession regulations on Monday. Quartararo and Yamaha gained three extra testing days in the winter of 2024, including participation in the February Sepang shakedown. Moreover, Yamaha now has the freedom to develop its engine further, potentially closing the performance gap.

Despite the disappointment in Valencia, Quartararo embraced the opportunity for extra testing. He expressed a commitment to understanding the team’s needs and working tirelessly to overcome the challenges.

In the midst of challenges, Quartararo praised the prototype aerodynamics tested in Valencia. While the engine showed incremental improvements from Misano, it fell short of revolutionary changes. The new aero fairing displayed positive strides, albeit requiring adjustments to strike the right balance.

A significant shift in Yamaha’s approach was noted with the collaboration with Luca Marmorini, an ex-Formula 1 engine chief. Quartararo sensed a move towards a more European mindset, with an emphasis on faster development. The period from February to July was identified as crucial for Yamaha’s progress and the adoption of a more agile mentality.

The MotoGP landscape poses hurdles for Yamaha’s 2024 bike. Quartararo’s insights offer a glimpse into the challenges, highlighting the team’s determination to improve. As Yamaha navigates the complexities of testing and development, the upcoming months will define the team’s trajectory in the fiercely competitive world of MotoGP.
