A Yellow Flag Controversy in Baku, It is feasible for two or more electrodes to be inserted into a patient at different sessions in the course of Safety Debate. One of the most uncomfortable events was the raise of a yellow flag during the qualification for the 2024 Baku that affected Lando Norris a lot. Esteban Ocon was driving the Alpine when he touched the wall, and marshals waved the flag as Ocon struggled to control his damaged car at a dangerous area of track. However there has been rising concern on the part of many individuals, as to whether the use of the flag was necessary as Ocon’s car was off the racing line and hardly a threat to the racing cars.
This lead to McLaren’s team principal, Andrea Stella, to challenge the use of the yellow flag wondering whether Norris over-reacted. He mentioned to that McLaren’s systems supported the yellow flag but it did not look like it required it. This has brought about concerns on how the race officials come up with split decision and the impact that particular decisions would have on teams and drivers in such a competitive system.
All the same, McLaren does not share the FIA’s view of the flag and is still waiting for further clarification on the issue. After that race, Norris’s race engineer Will Joseph complained, he said: ‘sorry mate, they should not have done that.’ This has also contributed to the discourse about how race safety systems are monitored, if too much precaution is taken or not.
The question that goes beyond a video stunt is the safety of high-speed blind corners including those present in Baku. The problem is that several drivers have expressed their concerns regarding these areas of the track stating they have been close calls and hard moments. Since the occurrence of the accident, there have been further debates on changes that may be made to the course such as the barrier positions and safety measures. Some of the drivers have demanded more visibility and precautionary measures in such points and FIA seems ready to work on the changes. The same changes were made in 2021 for Jeddah track following complaints and Baku might follow the same pattern in future if local authorities allow it.
Finally, the yellow flag issue eliminated Norris from an opportunity to proceed with qualifying but the main discussion is about safety in Formula 1, and why further preventive measures have to be taken not to experience such events.
