Jorge Martin Triumphs in Thrilling 2023 Indian MotoGP Sprint

In a thrilling turn of events at the Buddh International Circuit in the delayed 2023 Indian MotoGP Sprint race, Jorge Martin of Pramac Ducati secured a vital victory that brought him closer to narrowing Francesco Bagnaia’s championship lead.

The race unfolded with Martin seizing the lead right from the get-go as he navigated Turn 1 with precision, never relinquishing his position throughout the 11 laps. Bagnaia, riding for the VR46 team, held onto second place, while Marc Marquez of Repsol Honda clinched the third spot on the podium, marking his first top-three finish since the Portimao Sprint.

The race had its share of drama when pole qualifier Marco Bezzecchi collided with his VR46 teammate Luca Marini at Turn 1, causing Bezzecchi to drop to the back of the pack. However, he showcased remarkable resilience by posting the fastest lap times as he fought his way back up to fifth place.

Honda rider Joan Mir had a brief moment of brilliance in his performance, challenging his teammate Marquez for third place before running wide and subsequently crashing on lap 4. Brad Binder of KTM took up the pursuit of Marquez but couldn’t capitalize due to a small mistake. Meanwhile, Fabio Quartararo of Yamaha couldn’t fend off Bezzecchi, who executed a skillful overtake on the penultimate lap.

The afternoon schedule was subject to revisions due to an earlier downpour, leading to a ‘wet’ practice session just before the Sprint. However, the track quickly dried up, though riders expressed concerns about damp patches and parts of the starting grid. After a series of delays to allow further drying, the 21-rider field finally charged into Turn 1, with Martin taking the holeshot from the second grid position.

However, there was high drama as Bezzecchi was struck from behind by Marini, resulting in Marini’s crash. Bezzecchi rejoined the race but had to start from the back, and two other riders also ended up in the gravel.

Stefan Bradl seemed to replicate Bezzecchi’s error, making contact with Augusto Fernandez and Pol Espargaro, with only Fernandez remaining on two wheels. The incidents at Turn 1 will undergo review after the race.

Johann Zarco, Martin’s teammate, also suffered a fall during the middle stages of the race, as did Aleix Espargaro of Aprilia, who tumbled out of contention. All riders opted for medium front and soft rear slick tires.

Race distances were adjusted following feedback from riders and tire suppliers due to the hot and humid conditions. One lap was deducted from the MotoGP Sprint, Moto2, and Moto3 races, while the MotoGP Grand Prix on Sunday will be shortened by three laps.

Before the Sprint, Bagnaia held a 36-point lead over Jorge Martin in the championship standings. Michelin provided a wider selection of tires for the weekend, with four front and three rear options, as MotoGP encountered a new event without prior testing for the first time in over a decade.

The Buddh International Circuit, with its 13 turns and various straights, posed unique challenges for riders, including banked corners at 8 and 9 and a tricky Turn 1 during Friday practice.

Notably absent from the weekend were Ducati’s Enea Bastianini, recovering from hand and ankle fractures sustained in a multi-rider pile-up in Catalunya, and LCR Honda’s Alex Rins, still recuperating from leg fractures suffered at Mugello in May. HRC test rider Stefan Bradl filled in for Rins, while Ducati test rider Michele Pirro took Bastianini’s place.
