Ultimately, it came to Belgium, in the person of Union Saint-Gilloise. His goals saw his club promoted before he went on to score a host of goals in the top division. That success resulted in him moving to the Premier League club, Brighton. His first season in England was tough, but he kept on getting better. He was loaned to Stuttgart and particularly had a sensational Bundesliga season under his belt, but after the deal became permanent he finished second to Harry Kane in the Bundesliga scoring charts as he hit with 19 goals. So now, his World Cup appearances are a new conundrum for the German selection. With Kai Havertz starting in decent form, all of which has convinced Nagelsmann to rely on him for a career bait as his leading man, Deniz Undav is now become irrefutable. The Germany coach has already confirmed that the striker would be in the mix for the final group stage game vs Ecuador. Nagelsmann welcomes Undav’s contributions from the bench but more people are thinking his time should be getting to the opening whistle. It paid off straight away, with the 27-year-old changing the way Brazil played attacking football with his movement, energy and fine touch and awareness. It took a little magic in the system with his first goal being scored in the 23nd minute. Defender Hannes Delcroix tried to beat Johny Placide’s easy shot as he scrapped at the ball but ended up hitting Cunha with the ball that bounced in. Cunha’s positioning and awareness was as much a part as luck of the draw, as he was in the right place to take advantage of the chance. However, there was nothing fortunate about his second goal. The Barcelona winger, who had been flashing good form, had been big in Brazil’s attacking movement, but had to be removed from the field. It is hoped Ancelotti doesn’t need to bring a cambiar up too soon’ indeed, losing a player of Raphinha’s creative and experience touch would certainly be disappointing in the game as the fray starts now. Haiti, on the other hand, had trouble dealing with Brazil throughout most of the night. With both players still on course to qualify for the playoffs, they will miss out on any chance to beat Morocco and Brazil in the standings should they earn the victory in their last group outing. They are potentially equal on points to Scotland but there is a better head-to-head record for Steve Clarke’s side and there are no chances for Haiti to go up in Group C. The Caribbean nation is being demoralised by this result, but the fact that they had to come up against an opponent of with that much depth and experience is a hard blow for the team. Last but not least, Matheus Cunha responsible for Brazil’s best performance. He had a couple of goals to his credit but was often on the floor getting rid of high pressure, creating space and ensuring there was balance to the attacking play. But his achievement is more important as far as his captaincy is concerned. Being the leader of Manchester United has its high stakes, high expectations and high scrutiny. Each performance is analysed, each decision is debated, and each outcome is magnified. Fernandes’ success has nonetheless been achieved in the face of these difficulties. With Alonso, not only did Leverkusen win their first Bundesliga championship, but they did the German Cup as well. It was one of the most remarkable success turnarounds in Europe’s history which catapulted Alonso into one of the hot managers on the block in the league. Although linked, among others with FC Liverpool and Bayern Munich in the past year, Chelsea has been aggressive in their efforts to get his signature, having mothballed him in the Real Madrid summer transfer window earlier this year. Alonso’s intent was evident straight away when he was presented as the new manager of Chelsea. He stressed the common objectives in the ownership and sporting leadership to ensure both are committed in creating an outfit that can achieve trophies consistently. Carefully chosen yet significant his words were. At the moment, the powers that be at Chelsea are desperate for supporters to become believers once again in a prolonged vision that they have had to deal with several poor campaigns and managerial changes in their eight years prior. But Alonso is one of those footballing tasks  the rebuild for which duty is perhaps one of the most challenging to take on in the whole of Europe. Chelsea’s dressing room has been riven when it comes to the lower ends of the organization with a number of senior club players on the verge and debate about the project abruptly noting the club as an organisation started to percolate. At the same time, tactical flexibility was another crucial aspect of Alonso’s importance for Chelsea’s selection. There he earned a reputation for being a coach of highly spirited teams that would control the tempo of the game and load the rest of the teams with pressure but still be able to score in transition. The argument is being put forward by fans of Chelsea, who have given the team words of praise for its lack of direction this season, and with Alonso joining, it seems that will change at the start of this season. One thing is notable here  and it was suggested Alonso had concerns and concerned ones, about the kind of Chelsea’s owner and chief executive could be  and the talent the Premier League side was bringing in  but these have obviously been addressed in talks. Situated on the biggest of the most unsuccessful finishes to last season, Liverpool’s swirl was the more recent of meagre defeats with a stark 4-2 demolition at Villa Park being the final blow for the visitor side at the hands of Aston Villa’s Arne Slot side. Opponents are taking possession and controlling the ball in their possession easily, particularly in transition and set-piece situations. But the second half was lost by Liverpool who failed to get in control after threatening in the game, with Watkins going to goal on two monster opportunities. The issues are not just related to defense. There’s also been a lack of balance in Liverpool’s midfield and a lack of control in recent weeks. But there are only a handful of physical reasons that might account for what painfully few warts—confidence, intensity and tactical discipline—show in recent defeats at Manchester United, Chelsea and now Aston Villa. A relaxed end of season has turned into a stressful, unsure and very uneasy period for all involved with the club. Liverpool’s demise over the past few weeks has highlighted huge deficiencies in the squad that won’t be overlooked this summer. Real Madrid are in advanced talks with Jose Mourinho to re-sign him to the Santiago Bernabeu – and after what a dramatic stint the Spaniard has endured as a manager, he has shown a strong thirst for the experience. Over a decade later since he finished his first spell away from Spain, Mourinho has bounced back to be considered on top of the pile for a club that is looking for stability, authority and winning spirit after going through the murky season. After struggling with the disappointments of a 2025-26 campaign, Real Madrid is desperate for solutions. The Spanish giants missed a big trophy among their reward for a good season, and also lost the title of La Liga by a huge 14-point cattering with Barcelona, and then had avoided the Champions League after losing a virulent aggregate to Bayern Munich. But there were internal dissension feelings that were only intensifying the crisis, and that’s what club president Florentino Perez seems to need now: a strong personality to take total command. First, it’s feasible as Mourinho is available. The 63-year-old is currently in charge of Benfica, having inked a deal last September for two years. A release clause, though, in his contract means that he can leave Benfica for just €3mil within ten days of their last home game this season. The timing has created opportunity for Real Madrid to gallop, and reports of talks were picked up soon after Xabi Alonso’s departure this year. When questioned on his future, Mourinho was only dry. He did not provide any specific details in his statement ahead of Benfica’s last league match with Estoril Praia, though admitting there might be more talks to follow at the end of the season. Such comments merely added to his continued mystique and speculation about his potential move to Madrid. But in this instance it’s more than just a plug-and-play change of tactics or throwback memory. Now more than ever, Real Madrid’s squad seems to be a crew of unstable individuals, lacking the balance and chemistry needed to secure success. Since then, the club has faced internal conflicts, disagreements between senior players and frustration of supporters, which have hurt the club image. Recently midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde were both fined for a dispute in the dressing room, and defender Alvaro Carreras, who denied any clashes with Antonio Rudiger, denied to be involved. Superstar Kylian Mbappe, who suffered a knee injury, was disgraced after he rode, leading to a wave of anger from some fans. Mourinho’s attraction to Florentino Perez is quite simple: the truth is that the type of atmosphere Perez possesses is what Mourinho yearns for. There are few managers in world football with the authority that Mourinho has. One of his most trusted assets is his ability to manage dressing rooms, deal with superstar personalities and hold people to account. Real Madrid are no longer just looking for a coach who can enhance their tactical aspects. They’re looking for a person who’s able to heal the team’s emotional and psychological turmoil and mend the crack. The first term as Real Madrid manager, from 2010 till 2013, was one of the most challenging years in club modern history under Mourinho. In these years he won both the La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup and Barcelona’s home supremacy was stopped with the Copa del Rey victory. His tenure at Real Madrid was synonymous with aggression, perseverance and competitiveness. He ultimately left the club in controversy, but amongst those who have known him, he was viewed as one of the few managers who was able to turn pressure into a motivator. Mourinho has gone on to enjoy successful stints at Chelsea, Manchester United, Roma and more since his departure from Madrid. He was known for his trophies wherever he played, such as the Europa League with Manchester United and Europa Conference League with Roma. Although some calls his tactical style has become a thing of the past, his talent for creating winning cultures will continue to be recognised in Europe. But, meanwhile Real Madrid have little room for patience. The standards the club requires are the immediate ones and yet another season without trophies would be unacceptable to the supporters and the club (board). Mourinho would bring his winning ways to high-pressure matches, which are just some of the things Madrid need. If he is rested, there would be an instant arising of expectations on his return, but there would be a more structure that was missing this season as well. Last but not least, Mourinho’s return will be one of the biggest football stories leading into the upcoming season. Real Madrid are not looking to hire just another manager. At a time the club feels at risk on and off the field, they are trying to concentrate on your identity, power back your competitive hunger. For that job – Mourinho is the natural choice when it comes to personality, leadership and winning mentality. The Portuguese coach will be back on the Bernabeu under intense pressure, but also with high hopes, if talks concerning the team are concluded in the next few days. Michael Carrick’s game in the Premier League wasn’t what anyone could have hoped for – and that goes for the boys’ eyes too but Casemiro, at 34, has yet to demonstrate all his worth with Manchester United. When the Brazilian was left out of the squad, United’s midfield lacked the depth, leadership and control that was a worry at the turn of the season. Carrick said that Casemiro will be back for next week’s match against Nottingham Forest, but the Sunderland game was a stark reminder of how tough it’ll be to replace him for Manchester United this summer. Numbers speak thundersounds. It’s been seven times this season that United has recorded a league loss without Casemiro in the lift-off, and what they did in the recent clash at the Stadium of Light was the final nail in their coffin. The first is that starting from the first whistle, United had no authority in the midfield. Sunderland dominated the play for much of the match, made better chances and were much more settled in the transitions. But with Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte both absent, Carrick had to make some changes to his midfield. The part of seven had become more Kobbie than ever while no wonder Mason Mount played further forward and touched down with Bruno Fernandes. The balance just wasn’t present, though. Mainoo had certainly not been the ideal choice for the ‘settler’ in the attacking role, and has also demonstrated he is inexperienced in the deep-lying role, with United now rather raw.There’s no denying his party was rather raw, but it’s also a conversation point that Mainoo has never been the logical deep-lying option, particularly when attacking Sunderland were fresh. The main difficulty for United was the ability to move the ball together through midfield and Sunderland managed to get on the edge of it with the ball on several occasions. The headline figure of concern was made in attacking. Manchester United were unable to score through until the dying embers of the final minute in which Matheus Cunha was the final man to test Sunderland’s lastgen stoppage time goalkeeper Robin Roefs. The loss of any creativity and control was alarming for a team looking for Champions League consistency. Carrick denied mental fatigue had set in to his players, after the game, when it was suggested that the squad had spread their best performance already. The United coach had to acknowledge that the team was still as committed and as motivated as they can be, but even that could not be achieved without Casemiro at their centre of the park centre. The Brazilian’s suitcase (or shoulder) isn’t limited to tackles and interceptions. His experience, positioning and game management continues to be vital to Manchester United. Elderly midfielder Sutherland Regis le Bris made an accurate comparison between Casemiro and the veterans of his time, Granit Xhaka, after the pair’s complementary performances, in this regard. Le Bris noted that a master will also be able to handle situations under pressure, control the tempo of games and direct teammates through challenging situations. All those qualities don’t really show up in statistics, but when they’re gone, you see them. Casemiro, however, is still there to give the midfield a sense of leadership, tactical sense, and composure that they don’t always have on their own. Manchester United’s recruitment drive this summer is indicative of that worry. Internal favourites include Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, who is seen as the club’s first choice to replace Hall, as well as Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott. But the Sunderland game made it clear, however, that the issue of youth at midfield wasn’t necessarily the remedy. Casemiro’s job is not only to be a tech guy, it’s a psychological one. He is responsible for setting up the midfield, covering his defence and trying to calm the meeting when games get heated. Those are attributes that do not come easily. Limiting factors for Manuel Ugarte’s future at Old Trafford are also in question. The Uruguayan was thought to be the next in line to replace Casemiro, but there has been increasing uncertainty internally over his ability to enjoy a passing range and the same level of maturity to exert himself on the ball on a regular basis in the Premier League. What that requires is that United will need a number of midfield signings instead of a marquee signing. A junior box-to-box regency could join with a defender-aside who can take up the challenge of the Premier League straight away. In the interim Kobbie Mainoo’s development is a balancing game. The teenager has been most dangerous in the advanced roles where they are free to push and role-play in attacks. Lowering him in deeper unfortunately diminishes his attacking qualities as well as turns a lot of weight on a younger shoulder. Lastly Manchester United is a lack of depth in their team. Carrick pulled five different players against Sunderland, but it was evident that quality is what has dropped. The key word for the event was lack of it – creativity, defensive protection and attacking threat were all absent from the team as a whole. It was a reminder of the fact that despite growth in the United ranks under Carrick, they are still further from a squad that they might consider to be fit and complete. While he might no longer be as dominant in games as he was at Real Madrid, he’s still incredibly smart and an incredible leader for Manchester United. It’ll take skill, careful thinking and patience to replace that formula. The Sunderland display was a warning for United, who may or may not be drawn toward signing some players in the free agency that’s expected during the summer. Finding the next Casemiro is not a case of just acquiring the talent, though this is of course important, but finding the control, experience and authority in the heart of midfield again. Follow
