Even though Morocco were the stronger side, Verbruggen was making a wonderful save at an important moment to keep his side in the game before the break, as the Netherlands were finding it difficult to set up any scoring chances. Morocco upped the ante after the break and were looking to even up the score. Hakimi hammered the crossbar from close quarters after being funnelled by Azzedine Ounahi and Micky van de Ven made just a last chance tackle to deny the Moroccan forward in the box. Rounding the ball off again with another superb save, Verbruggen foiled an inswinging corner from crossing the line. Frustrated by their lack of attack and wanting more of that, Koeman opted to replace Wijnalds with Wout Weghorst and switch to a four-man backline. The approach was both tactical and immediate success. On the 51st second on the field, Weghorst was welcome when he waved Verbruggen’s long ball to Crysencio Summerville’s brilliant delivery for Cody Gakpo. The Liverpool striker could not have made a more daring shot, his cross landing straight away for Yassine Bounou which gave the Netherlands a priceless 18-minute lead. The downward slide has been brutal for a team that started the day in a relatively strong place among the third placed teams. Vinicius Jr Silences the Tartan Army As in all things, Scotland had to get off to a solid start. Avoiding a slow start, after losing an opening to Morocco in the last match, was key. Those plans went only seven minutes, though. Brazil got in on their 11th strike by causing a costly defensive error. When it was his turn to make the call, Scott McKenna played with hesitation and Brazil’s hot frontline hitting him. The ball eventually passed to Vinicius Jr and the academy stalwart was able to get behind keeper Angus Gunn, before beating him once again into an empty net. A moment of quality from one of the world’s most dangerous attackers, but at the same time a moment Scotland will look back at with frustration. A goal turned everything around. Defensive Errors Come at a High Price Once More. But the first goal was just a prelude to Scotland’s troubles. Brazil were still on top of possession and territory, and took Scotland into their half. The Scots made a brief recovery but another defensive blip proved to be terminal. These attacks were to be avoided when Robertson gave the ball away in an unsafe position to Brazil. Bruno Guimaraes shot a long-range pass to Vinicius Jr who somehow managed to get the ball through the defense to score at the far post. Brazil threatened each time they moved forward. Before the visitor got a break from that with Gunn’s great save, Vinicius Jr almost scored again to put the match on ice. Brazil Add the Finishing Touch Then Brazil was able to put the finishing touch at half time in the second half. Then Guimares had time to get back on the pitch and knock away the attackers before positioning Matheus Cunha for Brazil’s third goal. The 3-0 score was final. Neymar made his debut in the late stages of the match, injecting some drama for Brazilian fans. Neymar was back on the national team after a prolonged layoff, and got a hero’s welcome from the Miami crowd. He was no lifeboat to save Brazil from relegation as they were locked out of the last two places with the top two in the table, and his presence only boosted their status. McTominay found the back of the net several times in the rest of the first half but Alisson held firm. What happens next for Scotland? Now, the greatest uncertainty is over Scotland World Cup hopes. Men with hearts of steel weren’t too “hard to kill” to make it back to the matchday 2 round of the knockout. Their development prospects will be based on the other group’s results in the next few days. Senegal, Ecuador, Curacao, Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia are among the contenders to be nearer to Scotland than the third placed countries. Currently a projected knockout with Mexico is possible were Scotland to get through. It must have taken Mohamed Salah a long, long time. Egypt finally broke, against all odds, out of their World Cup rut with a world cup game and it was the man who needed it most who played it. The Pharaohs ended their frustrating engagement in Group G football at BC Place on Wednesday night, dispatching the whole nation into scenes of pure and unfettered joy, beating New Zealand 3-1 in the game. This was so much more than a football fixture for Salah, who has come through so many challenges on the pitch, off the pitch, and in his heart during the course of his career, all the way up to these China Cup games. It was personal.It was a far from easy first half. New Zealand, the lowly side from the bottom of the tournament and bottom of the world (last at 84th place) had absolutely nothing to lose and made Egypt very uncomfortable. In the 15th minute Finn Surman took over from the All Whites at a corner and again the familiar darks took hold, for the whole subsequent 45 the front manipulation of the game by the Welsh side began. But with eight minutes of regular time left in the game, Salah took a break in the left side of the lower corner and centre-back Trezeguet, with the substitute, raced to make the deal, pinching down a diving header to put the 3-1 win on the board, which was a memorable result. Egypt were three goals up for 3 goals in World Cup history. The numbers were the story of an amazing night. The personal highlights were just as impressive for Salah. He was so close to Hossam Hassan’s record of 68 international goals in an 118 appearances for Egypt that he only needed one to overtake his scoring record. His induction at the 85th minute, when he earned a standing ovation on the field, was a testament to the moment, but more to the entire footballing nation that was watching thousands of miles away. Things are just as promising on the larger scale. With Group G opening the way for the top two teams to reach the quarterfinals, Egypt have four points top of the table. Belgium, who were heavily tipped to be the heavy favorites ahead of the start of the tournament, have only two draws from their first two matchups. The players and fans have rejoiced, but  and here the rules of the game must take precedence for a club like Tottenham failure to survive does not amount to failure. Final whistle, relief, excitement and emotion. The crowds cheered the players roamed the field in joy and briefly it seemed like they had accomplished a great feat. But on the other side of the festivities, there was a growing level of frustration. The fact the club made it to safety after fighting to stay out of relegation for most of the season to others was a stark reminder of how low they’ve fallen. Firstly, ignoring the importance of not dropping back isn’t a sympathetic hack at the issue. But defeat in the final round was threatening to lead to disaster for Tottenham. It was an enormous responsibility presented and boys did not disappoint lifting one of their best seasons performances. Although linked, among others with FC Liverpool and Bayern Munich in the past year, Chelsea has been aggressive in their efforts to get his signature, having mothballed him in the Real Madrid summer transfer window earlier this year. Alonso’s intent was evident straight away when he was presented as the new manager of Chelsea. The argument is being put forward by fans of Chelsea, who have given the team words of praise for its lack of direction this season, and with Alonso joining, it seems that will change at the start of this season.
